After harvesting, conventional cotton is processed with additional chemicals: bleaching agents, formaldehyde-based wrinkle-resistance treatments, synthetic dyes, and fabric softeners. Some of these chemicals remain in the finished fabric as residues.

Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or genetically modified seeds. Conventional cotton may contain trace chemical residues from farming and processing. While these levels are generally considered safe for most adults, some people — particularly those with sensitive skin, eczema, or chemical sensitivities — may react to these residues. Babies and young children, whose skin is thinner and more permeable, are also more vulnerable.
Organic cotton eliminates this concern entirely. With no synthetic chemicals at any stage, the finished fabric is as clean as cotton can be.
Allergies

Feel and Performance Differences
In terms of pure feel, organic and conventional cotton are very similar when the same fiber quality and weave are used. An organic cotton percale sheet at 400 TC feels virtually identical to a conventional cotton percale sheet at 400 TC.
However, there are subtle differences:
- Organic cotton may feel slightly softer initially because it lacks the chemical sizing and finishes that give conventional cotton its stiffness out of the package.
- Organic cotton may shrink slightly more on the first wash (3-5%) since it has not been treated with chemical shrinkage-control agents. After the first wash, it stabilizes.
- Organic cotton tends to age well, maintaining its softness and integrity without the gradual breakdown of chemical finishes.
