How to Wash, Dry, and Care for Your Bed Sheets the Right Way
A premium set of sheets can last five to fifteen years — or it can start pilling and fading within months. The difference comes down to how you care for them. Proper washing, drying, and storage techniques dramatically extend the life of your bedding while keeping it soft, fresh, and comfortable.
Here is the complete guide to caring for every type of sheet material.
General Rules for All Sheet Materials
Before diving into material-specific care, these rules apply to every type of sheet:
- Wash before first use. New sheets have manufacturing finishes that should be removed. The first wash also softens the fabric and pre-shrinks it.
- Wash sheets alone or with similar items. Washing sheets with towels, jeans, or clothing with zippers and hooks can cause pilling, snagging, and uneven wear.
- Use mild, liquid detergent. Powder detergent can leave residue in the fibers. Use about half the recommended amount — too much detergent is a common cause of stiffness.
- Skip the fabric softener. Fabric softener coats fibers with a waxy residue that reduces absorbency and breathability over time. If you want softness, add a half cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle instead.
- Avoid bleach. Bleach weakens fibers and causes yellowing. For whitening, use oxygen-based brightener or baking soda.
Material-Specific Care Instructions
Cotton Percale and Sateen
Machine wash in cold or warm water (up to 105 degrees F) on a normal cycle. Tumble dry on low to medium heat. Remove promptly to reduce wrinkles. Percale may wrinkle more than sateen — a quick tumble on low heat or a light iron removes creases. Our Royal Classic and Royal Luxe sheets are designed for easy machine care.
Egyptian Cotton
Machine wash in cold water on a gentle cycle. Egyptian cotton's long fibers are strong but benefit from gentler handling. Tumble dry on low heat and remove immediately. Avoid high heat, which can damage the fiber structure. Egyptian cotton sheets get softer with every wash when cared for properly.
Bamboo Viscose
Machine wash in cold water on a gentle or delicate cycle. Bamboo fibers are more delicate when wet. Tumble dry on the lowest heat setting or line dry. Avoid wringing or twisting. Do not use bleach or harsh detergents. Our Royal Breeze bamboo sheets reward gentle care with lasting softness.
Organic Cotton
Machine wash in cold water with a gentle, eco-friendly detergent. Organic cotton lacks the chemical finishes of conventional cotton, so it may shrink slightly more on the first wash (up to 5%). After the initial shrinkage, it stabilizes. Tumble dry on low heat. Our Royal Pure organic sheets are pre-washed to minimize first-wash shrinkage.
Microfiber
Microfiber is the easiest material to care for. Machine wash in warm or cold water on any cycle. Tumble dry on low heat. Microfiber dries quickly and resists wrinkles. Avoid high heat, which can melt synthetic fibers. Our Royal Comfort microfiber sheets come out of the dryer ready for the bed.
How to Remove Common Stains
Blood
Always use cold water — hot water sets protein stains permanently. Soak the stain in cold water immediately, then apply hydrogen peroxide or an enzyme-based stain remover. Wash in cold water. For dried blood, soak in cold salt water (2 tablespoons per quart) for several hours before washing.
Sweat and Body Oil
These stains build up over time, causing yellowing. Pre-treat with a paste of baking soda and water, let sit for 30 minutes, then wash in warm water with a bit of oxygen brightener. Prevention tip: shower before bed and wash sheets weekly.
Coffee or Tea
Blot immediately with cold water. Apply a mixture of dish soap and hydrogen peroxide, let sit 10 minutes, then wash normally. If the stain has set, soak in oxygen brightener solution overnight.
Wine
Blot (do not rub) with a clean cloth. Pour salt generously on the wet stain to absorb the liquid. After 5 minutes, rinse with cold water. Apply hydrogen peroxide, let sit 30 minutes, then wash.
How Often to Wash
- Every 1-2 weeks — standard recommendation for most people
- Weekly — if you have allergies, pets, or sweat heavily
- After illness — wash in hot water to kill germs
- Pillowcases every 3-4 days — they collect the most oil and bacteria from your face and hair
Storage Tips
Store clean, completely dry sheets in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Fold neatly or roll to minimize creases. A linen closet or dresser drawer works well. For long-term storage, place sheets inside one of their own pillowcases to keep the set together and protect from dust.
Avoid storing sheets in plastic bins or bags, which can trap moisture and cause mildew. Breathable cotton storage bags are a better option.
